Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire - a lighthearted nostalgia-fest, warming heats across generations

A new film in the Ghostbusters franchise is set for release, with the return of its original stars. Find out everything you need to know here.

After a successful return of the franchise in 2021, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has made an assault on Box Offices once again.

Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard and McKenna Grace are reprising their roles for the next in the film series, but - perhaps most excitingly - original cast members such as Bill Murray will be joining them in the film too.

So what can we expect from the Jason Reitman-directed film and who else returns from the original cast?

Who stars in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire?

Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson reprise their roles as the original Ghostbusters Peter Venkmen, Ray Stantz and Winston Zeddemore. They join Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace and Carrie Coon from the last film in the franchise. Also on the cast list Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, Celeste O’Connor, Logan Kim and Annie Potts, who returns as the original Ghostbusters secretary Janine Melnitz.

What's the plot of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire?

A synopsis from a press release explains that in: "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age."

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire review:

With fans of the original 1984 film old enough to be taking their own kids to to watch the latest in the franchise, it's easy to see why Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has such mass appeal. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson make a welcome return as original Ghostbusters Peter, Ray and Winston and allow us to revel in pure nostalgia, while witnessing the original chemistry that made them so famous.

Of the newer cast, Paul Rudd undoubtedly shines the most, providing us with some of the most genuine belly laughs of the film, with comedian and actor Kumail Nanjiani coming in close second in his role as unlikely hero and Fire Master.

Despite McKenna Grace's fall from grace and teen angst driving the film's storyline, the younger characters seem somewhat under-utilised for the most part - especially Stranger Things' star Finn Wolfhard, whose most memorable scene involves a run-in with iconic Ghostbusters monster Slimer. Still, there's just enough japes and cool a firehouse worth of ghosts to keep you entertained.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is the perfect movie night out for Ghostbusters fans old and new and while it won't completely blow you away, it sure will warm the cockles of your heart.
