A Sinéad O'Connor film is on its way this year and it's already being tipped for an Oscar.

Nothing Compares, is set to chart the Irish artist's meteoric rise following her game-changing cover of Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U and her catastrophic fall from grace, after she ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul II in 1992.

However, there's much more to the singer-songwriter and activist than those two moments.

Watch the cinematic trailer for Nothing Compares, find out when the film is released and what we can expect from it.

What is the Sinead O'Connor film about?

A synopsis for the film reads: "The story of Sinéad O'Connor's rise to worldwide fame, and how her iconoclastic personality resulted in her exile from the pop mainstream. Focusing on prophetic words and deeds across a six-year period (1987-1993), the film reflects on the legacy of this fearless trailblazer, through a contemporary feminist lens."

The trailer, which sees the O'Connor walk on stage to a tidal wave of boos in the 90s, begins with audio from the present day star.

"It was such a shock for me to become a pop star," she says. "It's not what I wanted. I just wanted to scream.

"Everybody in music has a story in terms of what they went through."

The trailer also sees her explaining the moment she went from a revered singer, who'd released one of the biggest singles of the time, to a complete social pariah.

"I acted at the time in a way that I felt would be the most true to myself," a young Sinead tells an interviewer in throwback footage.

Though short, it's seems clear from the trailer that the documentary film will explore the moment she decided to shine a light on abuse in the Roman Catholic Church, but also her activism as well as her career beyond the best selling Prince cover.

Nothing Compares is released in UK and Irish cinemas from 7th October 2022.
